Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reiterated that a future government led by John Dramani Mahama will abolish several taxes, including the e-betting tax, e-levy, COVID-19 levy, and emission tax.
Speaking to party supporters and residents in the Nkawkaw constituency, in the Eastern region, Dr. Omane Boamah referred to these as “BECE taxes” and criticized them as burdensome to Ghanaians.
Dr. Omane Boamah blamed the current administration, particularly Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his Economic Management Team, for mismanaging the economy, which he claims led to the imposition of these taxes.
He described the e-levy tax in particular as unfair, stating that while transactions using cash are tax-free, digital transactions incur additional costs.
“Mahama is coming to relieve Ghanaians from the burden of taxes imposed on Ghanaians by this government. Mahama will abolish e-levy. Why is that the money in your pockets when used to buy gob3, waakye or kenkey there is no tax on them but that same money when you load to the momo wallet to buy something then e-levy is imposed”, Dr. Omane Boamah said.
He called the taxes “insensitive,” but the NPP government has refused to listen to the cry of Ghanaians.
“You imposed taxes on us, abolish the taxes you say you will not abolish unless we vote for you. So President Mahama says he will abolish the e-levy. He will just abolish the e-levy, he will also abolish the bet-winning tax. He will also abolish the covid levy and he will also abolish the emission tax”.
Dr. Omane Boamah urged citizens to remember this as they vote, particularly regarding the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidates both Members of Parliament and Presidential candidate who supported the e-levy and voted against them.
Furthermore, Dr. Omane Boamah criticized the economic leadership of Dr. Bawumia, calling him a “theoretical economist” disconnected from the economic realities affecting Ghanaians, such as high inflation, currency devaluation, and national debt.
He urged Ghanaians to support John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 elections, presenting Mahama’s experience and policies as viable solutions to the country’s economic challenges.
