The Ashanti regional Chairman for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi has made claims that the Kumasi airport built by John Mahama was like a kitchen.

Former President John Mahama with the support of Asantehene, Otunfouo Osei Tutu commissioned the first phase of the Kumasi Airport Development project in 2014.

The initiative was part of Mahama’s commitment to improving the aviation industry in the country.

However, the airport was denied the necessary facilities for many years by players, specifically operators of the local airline.

Speaking in an interview on GHone TV with Serwaa Amihere, Chairman Wontumi confidently said that the Kumasi airport Mahama claims he built was a kitchen airport.

“You see the beautiful airport now, but it wasn’t like this when Mahama was in office, Mahama was claiming he was building the Airport for the Ashanti people, but actually it was a Kitchen Airport, the place we cook”.

However, President Nana Akufo-Addo and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, also officially commissioned the improved structure of the Prempeh I International Airport, Kumasi formerly known as the Kumasi International Airport on Friday, May 10, 2024.

President Akufo-Addo renamed the Kumasi International Airport to honour Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh I for playing a pivotal role in strengthening the Ashanti kingdom during his reign in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
