The country’s largest opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC) is accusing the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Central Command, Brigadier General Michael Opoku of colluding with the ruling party to cheat in this year’s election.
In a press conference at the party’s headquarters, the NDC’s chief spokesperson, Sammy Gyamfi said his party had got word that the scheming which included tampering with election materials and launching a brutal assault on opposition polling agents was underway.
Mr. Gyamfi observed that Brigadier General Michael Opoku who had played in a role in mobilizing National Security personnel during the infamous by-election violence at Ayawaso West-Wuogon in 2019, had no business running point on election security this year.
“We have invited you here today in connection with credible reports we have received on the nefarious activities of one Brigadier-General Michael Opoku, calculated at rigging the upcoming December polls for the ruling New Patriotic Party,” the NDC National Communications Officer told reporters.
He claimed that President Akufo-Addo had “mandated” the Brigadier-General to manage “a well-crafted scheme that has been designed by the NPP to rig the upcoming election, particularly in the Ashanti Region through ballot stuffing, swapping of ballot boxes, swapping of pink sheets and other clandestine activities” due on December 2 where special voting is scheduled to take place.
The NDC said it will continue to monitor the ‘schemers’ with eagle eyes to avert any attempt to subvert the will of the people.
Mr. Gyamfi further called on the Chief of Defence Staff to investigate the matter with the goal of “bringing Brigadier-General Opoku to book”.
Brigadier-General Michael Opoku was inducted in July in the position of General Officer Commanding (GOC) Central Command, a top job in the country’s military hierarchy.
