In a significant operation last night, the Ghana Police Service successfully intercepted 17 boxes of suspected gold allegedly being transported illegally to Dubai. The operation occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. at the Aviance terminal of the Kotoka International Airport.
The interception was initiated following a tip-off from members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who alerted authorities to suspicious activity at the terminal. Acting swiftly, the police intercepted a vehicle parked at the Aviance terminal, where a search uncovered the concealed boxes.
The consignment, which is suspected to have been illegally destined for Dubai, was transported to the custody of the Accra Regional Police Command late Tuesday night. On Wednesday afternoon, the 17 boxes were re-examined to ensure their contents remained intact.
Speaking on the matter, Alhaji Yahaya Kondo, a leading member of the NDC team that played a pivotal role in the operation, highlighted the need for a detailed investigation. “This afternoon, we are taking the same 17 boxes, we just cross-checked them now, to the Bank of Ghana for safekeeping until January 7,” he said.
Alhaji Kondo emphasized that only a thorough forensic audit and investigation could uncover the origins of the cargo and those involved in its alleged illegal transportation. “The truth will emerge after January 7,” he added.
The case has already sparked widespread speculation, with rumors circulating about potential high-profile involvement. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations unfold.
The intercepted gold is now under the custody of the Bank of Ghana, ensuring its safekeeping as the nation awaits clarity on this high-stakes operation.
