Politicisation of feeding programme breeds corruption – SEND West Africa

The Chief Executive Officer of SEND West Africa, Siapha Kamara, has said the continuous politicisation of the school feeding programme is dangerous to its sustainability.

“The over politicisation of the school feeding programme is a problem,” he told Morning Starr host Francis Abban Tuesday.

His comments were in reaction to reports of chaos at the school feeding secretariat in the Northern regional capital Tamale. A pro-NPP group Monday invaded and shut down the office, accusing the Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister Otiko Afisa Djaba of sidestepping the authority of the programme’s regional coordinator, Madam Felicia.

They also claim the minister has taken up the responsibility of the regional coordinator and appointing only Gonjas as Zonal coordinators of the programme.

In his reaction, however, Mr Kamara decried the actions of the group as unfortunate, saying: “The over politicization of the school feeding programme perpetuates inefficiencies, corruption and many more.”

In a related development, the  Northern regional women organizer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hajia Amama Seidu, endorsed and commended the party youth group – The Burma Camp –  for violently locking up the office of the School Feeding Programme on Monday.

Hajia Amama in angry tirade made disparaging comments about the Gender minister  Madam Otiko and said she was elated that the youth carried out the violent action.

She went on to accuse the Gender Minister of tribalism, dubious appointment and dividing the women group in the region.

According to her, the action of the youth would force the party leadership to revisit the discussion on the welfare of the  School Feeding program under Madam Djaba and appealed to the President to detach the Programme from the ministry.
