Robberies: No need for soldiers yet – Aning

Security expert Dr. Kwasi Aning has shot down calls for the involvement of the military in the effort to arrest the rising spate of robberies in the country.

So far about 40  robberies have taken place in the country since the beginning of the year.

In the most recent attacks, one person was killed and huge sums of monies stolen after robbers struck in Accra and Tema in broad daylight within two days.

The incidents have sent panic waves among citizens prompting calls for a military intervention.

However, Dr. Aning told Starr News it is not yet time to engage the military in the issue.

“It is not yet time for the military, bringing the military in is dangerous, it socializes the military; it makes them lose their aura of invisibility and being the very last force that we resort to in times of crisis, we haven’t reached there yet.

“And we have been doing this gradually, where we are turning our military into a Police force, doing policing duties which are not their fundamental primary function,” he noted.

He stressed the Police can fight crime effectively if they are well resourced by the state.

“Let’s put in the logistics, let’s put in the money. We tend to lambaste the Police service but it’s a potentially effective institution. Politicians have failed to understand the function they perform, the types of interventions and retooling they need. Since 1991 all the thinking that has gone into making the Police Service a fit for purpose institution have all been thrown out of the window,” he bemoaned.
