The Foundation for Security Development in Africa (FOSDA) has urged Ghana’s Parliament to honor Ghanaian women by passing the Affirmative Action Bill.
According to FOSDA, the Affirmative Action Bill has been in Parliament for far too long adding that the 8th Parliament in leaving a legacy should pass the bill as their contribution to “break the bias.”
“So on a day like this one of the key thing we are calling for is the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill which has been in Parliament since the late 1990s and we have not seen the light on that.
“We want to encourage our MPs and Parliament to pass the Affirmative Action Bill, we want to tell them that this year we are not going to joke with it. We are coming and we will come very strong because for an equitable tomorrow we have to pass the bill today,” the Acting Executive Director for FOSDA, Theodora W. Anti told Starrfm.com.gh on the sideline of an ongoing event to mark the International Women’s Day at Nima in Accra.
She continued “We have been saying gender equality but truly we have not achieved much when it comes to gender equality and women empowerment. As much as NGOs, CSOs, and individuals, we have to do our part but the bigger part lies with the government to pass laws to push women forward, that will accelerate the equality of women.”
This year’s International Women’s Day – 2022 was under the theme “Gender Equity Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow.”
FOSDA targeted the young people in the Nima community for this year’s celebration. Therefore, the event was on the theme “Equipping young women with knowledge and capacity for leadership in a gender-equal and sustainable tomorrow.”
The event was in partnership with Women Peace and Security and the Center for Muslim Youth in Peace and Development (CMYPD).
Mrs. Williams Anti said FOSDA choose Nima because they want the celebration to get closer to local folks as well as give them some level of education on matters of gender and the power women possess in nation-building.
Special Guest for the event, a Leading Member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Haijia Hamdatu Ibrahim Haruna said for women to break the bias this should be done in a more persuasive manner.
She also called on parents to allow their female child to choose their career path and commended FOSDA for bringing the event to Nima.
