The lack of Teachers Bungalow at Adjena Senior High Technical School (SHTS) in the Asuogyaman District is affecting supervision of students particularly in the evening.
A School with population of about 2000 however has only one bungalow on campus accommodating the headmistress of the school.
Coupled With inadequate street lights on campus and lack of fence wall around the school, students take advantage to sneak out to town to engage in misconduct.
Chief of Adjena Tafoman; Nana Twum Barimah (III) says the development is worrying.
He alleged some of the students go to the extent of smoking marijuana in town.
The chief threatened to arrest such students if they do not desist from the act.
Due to this challenge, the Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, Thomas Ampem Nyarko on Monday May 29,2023 break grounds for construction of three-units chamber and hall self contain staff accommodation for the school.
The project funded through the MPs common fund and being executed by Edmat and Sons company will be completed in three months.
“There is no accommodation for any teacher in this school apart from the headmistress so every teacher has to look for accommodation outside the four walls of this institution and that has posed challenge for supervision of the students . Basically after typical school day (contact hours) every teacher goes home except those on duty and the best they can is to be around after preps make sure the students go to their dormitories then they also leave to their homes. What happened after the teachers had gone home is only God who knows. The students population has increased over the years and as teacher population also increase we make provision for their accommodation to create proximity to students and enhance supervision” Hon. Thomas Ampem Nyarko said.
The MP bemoaned that the ruling New Patriotic Party government has neglected the school, that not a single classroom block has been built to ease the infrastructural challenges worsened by exponential increase in students population under the Free Senior High School policy.
The MP said all major infrastructural facilities in the school including a one-storey boys dormitory block were built during Atta Mills/John Mahama led government.
The District Director of Education Augustina Adjoa Owusu ,and Senior House Master believe the project will ease staff accommodation challenge and boost supervision to ensure discipline.
“This project is a 3-unit bungalow flat which will keep three teachers on campus and with that they are going to imbibe discipline into the students in the sense that every good school that performs creditably is a school that is well discipline and here is the case our students move around during the night ,there is no teacher to monitor and track their movement in the sense that the teachers stay in town”.
Adjena Senior High Technical School in Asuogyaman district in Eastern region was established by the Ghana Education service in 1979 as an experimental junior secondary school on the then Adjena united middle school premises.
The school was upgraded in September, 1984 into a fully fledged secondary technical school.
However, the school continue to face many infrastructural challenges including lack of ICT Laboratory, toilet facilities, inadequate classrooms and dormitory facilities.
