Member of Convention People’s Party (CPP) and private legal practitioner, Kwame Jantuah has pledged to support Dr. Bawumia if, upon becoming president, he signs the anti-LGBTQI+ bill into law.
Mr. Jantuah expressed his disappointment over the delay in enacting the bill, which was passed by parliament over a year ago.
The anti-LGBT bill formally the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill is a proposed law in Ghana that would introduce wide-ranging restrictions on LGBT+ rights.
The bill was approved by the Parliament of Ghana on 28 February 2024 with bipartisan support and will only come into effect only if signed into law by President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Speaking on GHOne TV with Lantam Papanko, Mr. Jantuah questioned President Akufo-Addo’s inaction on the bill, considering the significant Christian population in Ghana and the President’s frequent church attendance.
He also highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s religious background and church attendance.
“What is the Christian population in Ghana? It’s about 70%; why are our politicians running to churches? If it wasn’t spiritually Christian, would they run there? Vice President Dr. Bawumia is a Muslim; he goes to Christian churches,” Mr. Jantuah stated.
He voiced concerns about the potential normalization of LGBTQI+ practices in Ghana and offered his support for Dr. Bawumia should he swiftly address the issue.
“In everything you do, it’s motive, not action; God judges us by our motives, not by our actions, so let’s sit and allow such filthy behavior to become part and parcel of our society. If Dr. Bawumia will immediately sign the bill, I’ll be happy and clap for him,” he declared.
Dr. Bawumia recently promised to sign the anti-LGBTQI+ bill during a visit to the Philadelphia Church.
