Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced the commencement of a controlled spillage from the Weija Dam as water levels approach the maximum safe operating limit.
In a statement issued today, GWL disclosed that the dam’s current level stands at 45 feet, just two feet below the maximum safe limit of 47 feet. The dam’s water level is reportedly rising steadily, prompting management to begin minimal spillage as a precautionary measure to protect the dam’s structural integrity and prevent potential disaster.
Residents living downstream have been advised to evacuate immediately to avoid any harm. The warning affects several communities including Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Adakope, and surrounding areas.
GWL emphasized the importance of adhering to all directives issued by the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the Ga West Municipal Assembly, and other disaster management agencies. The Assembly has also been tasked to desilt the estuary and remove refuse along the river’s course to enable the smooth flow of excess water into the sea.
“All stakeholders, including the chiefs and opinion leaders of affected communities, as well as institutions with properties downstream, are being notified of the current situation,” the statement noted.
GWL is urging the public to cooperate fully in the ongoing spillage exercise to avoid a recurrence of past flooding incidents and ensure public safety.
For further inquiries, GWL has directed the public to contact Stanley Martey, Head of Communications, via phone at 0244 336 180 or email at smartey@gwcl.com.gh.
