President John Dramani Mahama has announced the rollout of a pilot 24-hour economy in the Northern Region, signaling a major step toward his administration’s agenda of creating sustainable jobs and revitalizing Ghana’s economy.

The announcement was made during a courtesy call on the Overlord of Dagbon, His Royal Majesty Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama II, at the Jubilee House on Friday, June 13, 2025.

As part of the pilot phase, over 5,000 young people in the Northern Region will be enrolled in technical and vocational training programmes under the National Apprenticeship Programme, which President Mahama recently launched in Tamale.

He stated that the initiative will offer training in areas such as carpentry, welding, tailoring, shea butter processing, and agribusiness—sectors that are integral to the broader economic vision.

The 24-hour economy policy, a flagship programme of the Mahama administration, is designed to boost productivity, create jobs, and support round-the-clock operations in key industries including agro-processing, logistics, manufacturing, and community-based services.

President Mahama noted that the Northern Region has been strategically selected for the pilot phase due to its potential for growth and the need to harness local talent.

The President assured traditional leaders and the people of the region that his government will continue to prioritize youth development as a driver of national progress.

He said, “Your Majesty, I launched the National Apprenticeship Program in Tamale. Youth development is at the heart of our national rebirth, and the 2025 budget has provided adequate funding for the takeoff of the National Apprenticeship Program, which is being rolled out in partnership with our vocational institutions and the private sector across the country.”

“Over 5,000 youths from the northern region are expected to be trained in employable skills such as carpentry, welding, tailoring, share batter processing, and agribusiness. These efforts align with our broader vision of the 24-hour economy strategy, which will provide new job opportunities and extended business hours across agro-processing, logistics, and community services. I look forward to launching a pilot 24-hour economic zone in the northern region.”
