Ghana’s diplomatic efforts to secure the release of two nationals captured in the ongoing war in Ukraine took centre stage on Tuesday as Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.
The high-level meeting focused on Ghana’s humanitarian appeal for the release of the two citizens currently being held as prisoners of war. The discussions also addressed growing concerns over trafficking networks targeting vulnerable African youth and drawing them into the conflict.
Speaking after the talks, Ablakwa described the engagement as constructive and necessary. “Our primary mission is to secure the release of our two compatriots on humanitarian grounds. We are encouraged by the assurances received and remain optimistic about a successful outcome,” he said.
According to the minister, Ghana raised concerns about criminal networks that exploit unsuspecting young Africans with false promises, only for them to end up in dangerous combat situations.
“We cannot ignore the disturbing trend of trafficking syndicates luring vulnerable African youth into a war they did not sign up for. Ghana is committed to working with Ukraine and international partners to dismantle these networks,” Ablakwa added.
The minister conveyed the appreciation of President John Dramani Mahama and the Government of Ghana to the Ukrainian authorities for ensuring that the rights of the detained Ghanaians are being protected in accordance with international law.

Beyond the humanitarian discussions, both sides explored avenues to strengthen bilateral cooperation. Key areas identified include agriculture, defence, education, and trade.
President Zelenskyy also extended a formal invitation to President Mahama to visit Kyiv, signalling Ukraine’s interest in elevating diplomatic relations with Ghana.
The outcome of the negotiations is expected to shape Ghana’s next diplomatic steps as it continues to push for the safe return of its citizens while broadening ties with Ukraine.
