Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has disclosed that the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, was deeply uneasy about travelling by helicopter, a mode of transport he boarded for the first time that claimed his life.
In an interview with Joy FM on Monday, August 11, Mr. Muntaka recounted that just a week before the tragedy, Dr. Boamah cautioned him against using helicopters, urging him to prioritise safety over cost.
“But because of the fight against galamsey, he was ready to board the helicopter,” Muntaka said. “Despite all his reservations, despite the fact that he had never used it before, the first time he did, he never returned,” Muntaka lamented.
The Interior Minister described Dr. Boamah’s decision as a testament to his dedication to the government’s anti-illegal mining campaign, noting the irony and heartbreak in losing him during a mission he was determined to support despite personal fears.
Dr. Boamah was among eight officials who died in the Sikaman military helicopter disaster at Adansi Akrofuom on August 6, 2025.
The victims also included Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
