An Associate Director in Strategy and Transactions at Deloitte, Dennis Brown, has urged Ghanaians to approach discussions on the proposed renaming of Kotoka International Airport with national interest in mind, rather than ethnicity or emotion.
The proposal to revert the airport’s name to Accra International Airport, as announced by the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga and the Transport Minister, has sparked debate, particularly around the country’s history and the cost of making such a change.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Mr. Brown stressed that renaming a major international facility has financial implications that must be carefully weighed.
“Renaming a major international airport comes with cost implications, and those costs must be justified, especially in the current economic climate,” he said.
Mr. Brown also warned against turning the debate into a political or ethnic contest, saying it could weaken national unity.
“We must be careful not to reduce this debate to ethnicity or emotion. The focus should be on whether the change serves Ghana’s broader national interest,” he added.
However, a member of the Kennedy campaign team, Hon. Charles Forson, questioned the timing of the proposal, arguing that the country has more pressing concerns.
“At a time when Ghanaians are worried about jobs, food prices, and transport costs, this is not what should be at the top of the national agenda,” he said.
