Kasoa shooting: Awutu Senya East MP rejects Interior Minister’s claims, insists on Hawa Koomson’s attacks

Awutu Senya East MP Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor has dismissed claims by the Interior Minister that she refused to cooperate with investigations into the Kasoa election-day shooting, insisting the attacks indeed occurred.

Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, has rejected assertions by the Interior Minister, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, that she failed to cooperate with the committee investigating the 2024 election-related violence in Kasoa.

Mr. Muntaka, speaking at the government’s Accountability Series, had stated that the committee could not conclude its work because the MP and other key witnesses refused to assist with investigations into the shooting incident that left one person dead.

But addressing the media in Parliament on Thursday, Naa Koryoo described the minister’s claim as false and misleading, maintaining that she has been consistent about what happened and insisting that persons linked to former MP Mavis Hawa Koomson were behind the violence.

She clarified that she never denied the attack, saying, “At no time did I say no attack happened. I stated emphatically to the task force that on election day during my rounds I noticed my convoy was being followed by a V8 vehicle allegedly known to be used by Hawa Koomson and a NADMO pickup which had a green government number plate. After visiting some polling stations, I decided to go home because I felt my life was in danger.”

According to the MP, she believes that “at the conclusion of this investigation, the truer facts will emerge,” and questioned why the Interior Ministry allowed the probe to stall despite available evidence.

“There are videos to some of these attacks and these are available for the committee to aid their work. Friends of the media, does the unwillingness of eyewitnesses and victims to testify mean these documented acts of violence didn’t happen?” she asked.

Naa Koryoo further explained that she has not yet provided a written statement to the police due to what she described as ill treatment during the 2020 election violence, but stressed that statements circulating in the media attributed to her are inaccurate and not hers.

“Even if there are records of loss of life and injuries, I would have waited for the investigations to conclude before speaking. But I cannot keep quiet over an inconclusive report as clearly stated by our honourable Minister for Interior,” she said.

The MP reiterated her commitment to cooperate fully with any credible investigation, adding that justice must be served for the family of the deceased and others affected by the Kasoa election-day violence.
