President John Dramani Mahama has announced that appointments to fill the vacant positions of Minister for Defence and Minister for Environment, Science and Technology will be made in 2026, following the tragic helicopter crash on August 3 that claimed the lives of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

Addressing the Ghana Muslim Mission during a courtesy call at Jubilee House, the president dismissed growing speculation on social media about imminent replacements.

He made it clear that government will wait until the new year before naming new ministers.

Mahama said the decision is rooted in respect for the deceased ministers and the need for thoughtful consideration.

“Allah gives and Allah takes. He took two of our comrades and we haven’t filled those positions yet,” he noted.

Responding to predictions about who might take over the two portfolios, the president urged the public to remain patient. “I can see people speculating he’s going to appoint a new defense minister, a new environment minister. We’re not in a hurry,” he stressed.

He emphasized that the appointments would only be made after the festive season, pushing the decisions into 2026.

“I’ll do those appointments next year after the holiday… Go and enjoy Christmas and then after Christmas we will take a decision on those ones,” Mahama added.

His comments come amid calls—especially from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP)—for the government to quickly install a substantive Defence Minister to ensure robust oversight of security operations.
