The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) has appealed to the government to release outstanding monthly allowances for Assembly Members and to expedite the provision of motorbikes to ease their work at the local level.
In a statement after NALAG’s 4th Quarter National Executive Council meeting in Sunyani, the association expressed concern that only April and May allowances have been paid, leaving six months pending.
The delay, NALAG says, has caused “severe financial strain and operational challenges” for Assembly Members who continue to serve their communities under difficult conditions.
NALAG President, Alfred Asiedu Adjei, made a formal plea to the Minister for Finance, urging the release of the remaining funds.
“This appeal is made in the interest of fairness and equity; the spirit of good governance and decentralization; and in recognition of the significant responsibilities Assembly Members shoulder as the direct link between Government and the citizenry at the local level.”
The association also called on the government to prioritize the procurement of motorbikes for Assembly Members, highlighting that these are essential tools to improve mobility, community engagement, and service delivery.
Many members currently traverse large areas without adequate logistical support, which hampers efficiency.
NALAG reassured Assembly Members of its commitment, stating, “We continue to advocate firmly and consistently for the timely release of all outstanding allowance; we continue to lobby strongly for the procurement of the motorbikes for Honorable Assembly Members; we appreciate your patience, dedication, and tireless service to your communities.”
The association expressed confidence that the government will take swift action to address the backlog in allowances and logistical challenges, reinforcing Ghana’s decentralization efforts and strengthening grassroots governance.
