President-Elect of the Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS), Esaaba Esi Eunice Essien, has pledged to lead an inclusive and unifying administration following her decisive victory at the Union’s successfully concluded 23rd Annual Emergency Delegates Congress.

Ms. Essien secured an overwhelming mandate, polling 126 out of 128 valid votes cast — over 98%, underscoring strong confidence in her leadership at a critical moment for the national student body.

The Emergency Congress was convened after procedural and logistical challenges disrupted the earlier 23rd Annual Residential Delegates Congress held at the University of Ghana (Legon) Campus. Acting in accordance with Chapter 6, Article 36 of the GUPS Constitution, the Union’s Electoral Commission organized the emergency sitting at Knutsford University College to safeguard constitutional order and continuity.

The provisional results have since been signed and certified by the GUPS Electoral Commissioner, Samir Osuman.

Following the announcement, Student Representative Councils (SRCs) and affiliated institutions across the country – including UPSA, Wisconsin International University College, UniMAC–Ghana Institute of Journalism, the Institute of Business Management and Journalism (IBNJ), Multimedia Institute of Ghana, Jayee University College, among others – issued congratulatory messages expressing confidence in the new leadership and reaffirming their commitment to a united and progressive GUPS.

In her acceptance remarks, Ms. Essien thanked members of the General Assembly for ensuring the successful conduct of the elections despite the challenges encountered.

She commended the GUPS Electoral Commission for what she described as a principled and courageous discharge of its constitutional mandate and praised the alumni of the Union for standing firm in defense of constitutional democracy.

She also acknowledged the role of the Ghana Police Service, particularly the East Legon and Airport Divisions, for maintaining law and order and ensuring a peaceful electoral process.

“I pledge to run an inclusive administration that brings everyone on board,” the President-Elect said. “No one will be left behind as we work together to restore confidence, strengthen unity, and advance the collective interests of all professional students.”

The successful conduct of the Emergency Delegates Congress is being widely hailed as a reaffirmation of GUPS’ constitutional resilience, signaling a renewed commitment to accountability, unity, and democratic governance within the Union.
