The Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts has announced the immediate reopening of Ussher Fort and James Fort in Accra, following a temporary closure for safety reasons.
The closure, which had restricted public access, was implemented to ensure visitor safety while restoration works were ongoing.
According to the Ministry, consultations with the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) have now resulted in the implementation of strict safety measures, allowing controlled public access without disrupting the restoration process.
Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, emphasized the importance of adherence to the new guidelines.
“All visitors, tour guides, and operators are required to comply fully with the measures. Unauthorized access outside approved areas remains strictly prohibited,” she said.
The Ministry assured the public that the reopening balances both safety and the preservation of Ghana’s cultural heritage. Visitors can now enjoy the historic sites under monitored conditions, ensuring an educational and secure experience.
The reopening took effect on December 22, 2025, and signals the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to maintaining accessible and safe cultural landmarks for residents and tourists alike.
