The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) is investigating alleged vote buying and vote selling during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in Ayawaso East on February 7, 2026.
In a statement on Sunday, February 8, 2026, the OSP said the probes will focus on claims of inducement and the sources of funds used for the alleged corrupt acts.
According to the anti-corruption office, it began investigations into the NPP’s presidential contest after the party conducted its primaries on January 31.
It also disclosed that it deployed officers to monitor the Ayawaso East NDC primaries in real time on February 7, following reports of inducement and other alleged corrupt practices.
“On 7 February 2026, the OSP commenced real-time investigation in respect of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries at the Ayawaso East constituency,” the statement said.
The OSP further announced a separate investigation into an alleged assault involving one of the candidates, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, who emerged winner of the NDC contest.
The office claimed that during the conduct of the primaries, an OSP officer was attacked while attempting to serve an investigative directive on Baba Jamal in connection with the vote buying allegations.
“Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed allegedly abetted thugs to physically attack an officer of the OSP, who was serving an investigative directive on him,” it said.
“As a result, the OSP has opened further investigation into the assault of an authorised officer of the OSP in the performance of his functions,” the statement added.
The OSP reminded the public that acts such as inducement, intimidation and election-related violence are criminal offences under Ghana’s laws.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has recalled Baba Jamal Ahmed from his diplomatic position as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, following developments linked to the Ayawaso East primaries.
