A group of 2023 graduate teachers is calling for an expansion of the government’s latest teacher recruitment exercise, arguing that the announced 7,000 slots are insufficient to absorb the large number of qualified graduates still awaiting posting.
In a statement issued by the CUTT Executives 2023, the group said they were expecting recruitment to begin in September 2025 after completing their national service in February 2025, but were instead confronted with what they described as an inadequate number of vacancies.
According to them, over 16,000 trained teachers from their batch are currently unemployed and awaiting placement.
They contend that the 7,000 positions announced by the Education Minister do not reflect the scale of qualified applicants available.
The group described the situation as “disappointing and heartbreaking,” insisting that the announcement contradicts their expectations and undermines the long-standing practice of recruiting teacher graduates in batches.
“There is a saying that ‘first come, first serve’,” the statement noted, adding that Ghana’s education recruitment system has traditionally operated on a batch-based approach rather than gradual hiring.
They are therefore appealing to media houses, civil society organisations, and key government actors to intervene and engage the Education Minister and the Presidency to review and increase the recruitment quota.
The group also emphasised the need for transparency and fairness in the process, stating that their cohort has waited longer than expected for posting and should be prioritised in the current recruitment exercise.
CUTT Executives 2023 expressed hope that their appeal will be considered, stressing that increasing the recruitment numbers would help address unemployment among trained teachers and strengthen the country’s education system.
