The Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has underscored the critical role of the judiciary in sustaining Ghana’s democracy, stating that a strong and independent court system remains essential to the country’s stability and governance.

Speaking at the launch of the 150th anniversary of the Supreme Court of Ghana in Accra on Thursday, April 16, 2026, he highlighted the direct link between the strength of the judiciary and the health of the nation’s democratic system.

“When the Supreme Court is strong and independent, the rule of law stands firm. When justice is accessible, impartial, and humane, democracy breathes freely,” he stated.

The Chief Justice emphasised that the judiciary is deeply embedded in Ghana’s national development, noting that it plays a central role in protecting rights, resolving disputes, and upholding constitutional order.

“The Judiciary does not stand apart from Ghana. We are woven into her story; her struggles, her progress, and her highest aspirations,” he said.

He stressed that public trust in the justice system is fundamental to democratic governance, adding that the credibility of the courts depends on fairness, integrity, and the ability to deliver justice effectively.

According to him, every case before the courts carries real human consequences, making the role of the judiciary not just institutional but deeply personal. “Behind every case is a human story: a family, a livelihood, a life in the balance,” he noted.

The Chief Justice further pointed out that the strength of the judiciary lies not only in legal frameworks or reforms, but in the integrity and judgment of those who serve within it.

“No technology or reform can replace conscience and judgment,” he added.

He called for sustained efforts to ensure that the judiciary remains independent, accessible, and responsive to the needs of citizens, as Ghana continues to strengthen its democratic institutions.

The remarks formed part of activities marking the Supreme Court’s 150th anniversary, themed “Honouring the Past, Celebrating the Present, and Defining the Future.”
