NPP is using the power outages to malign this NDC administration and paint them black... - Kwame Owusu Danso Esq. – Exec. Director, Lands and Mines Watch

Executive Director of Lands and Mines Watch, Kwame Owusu Danso Esq., has accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of exploiting Ghana’s recent power challenges as a political tool to discredit the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.

Speaking on GHToday on GHOne TV on Monday, April 27, Mr. Owusu Danso described the opposition’s approach as “a calculated communication strategy.”

“This is a calculated communication strategy by the NPP administration to malign this administration, to paint this administration[NDC] black and to let the Ghanaian people view them from the lenses of hatred,” he stated.

He said the NPP’s handling of the current outages sharply contrasts with how it responded to public concerns during its own time in office when Ghana faced severe energy challenges.

Reflecting on that period, he recalled that despite widespread frustration, Ghanaians were often denied clear explanations.

“All the minister had to do was to give the Ghanaian people a certain level of respect and to address the issue with decorum,” he said, adding that instead, citizens endured the crisis without what he described as “a sensible, reasonable response.”

Mr. Owusu Danso acknowledged that recent outages have created discomfort but stressed that the current administration has been more transparent by openly admitting the challenges and communicating their causes.

“We have been told that yes, we acknowledge that there are some outages. But the outages are not due to our financial incapacity. It is by reason of some maintenance which is going on,” he noted.

He identified the fire incident at Akosombo as a major factor, stating that Ghana had been informed that “750 to 1,000 megawatts of power is truncated by reason of the fire that gutted the station.”

According to him, while the power disruptions are real, the opposition’s reaction appears politically motivated. “Behind the veil of concern is the politicisation of it,” he asserted.

Mr. Owusu Danso said the current administration’s willingness to explain the crisis and provide updates should be recognised, expressing optimism that government would soon outline clear solutions.

“At the very least, you have somebody who is listening and explaining to you what is occasioning that. The solutions will come,” he said.
