The Member of Parliament for North Tongu and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has indicated that construction of the Volivo Bridge across the Volta Lake is set to begin as work on the Eastern Corridor Road reaches an advanced stage.
According to the Minister, progress on the Dorfor Adidome–Asikuma and Juapong–Asikuma sections of the road has fulfilled a critical requirement for the commencement of the bridge project.
“It is important to emphasise that this is the road that will be serving as the approaches for the… Volivo to Adidome Bridge,” he said during an inspection tour of the project.
He explained that the bridge, which has been described as a major infrastructure undertaking, was contingent on the completion of the road network to ensure accessibility and viability.
“That bridge is about to start… the condition was that we needed to do the road because they didn’t want the bridge to be a white elephant,” he noted.

Mr. Ablakwa disclosed that the road project is currently nearing 60 percent completion, a development he said has paved the way for contractors to mobilise and begin work on the bridge.
The Volivo Bridge, which he likened in design to the Yokohama Bridge in Japan, is expected to significantly enhance connectivity across the Volta Lake and improve movement within the Eastern Corridor.
The road project, estimated at $90 million and financed through a loan facility from the African Development Bank, spans key communities and connects parts of the Volta, Eastern and Greater Accra Regions.
Mr. Ablakwa described the broader project as “transformational,” expressing optimism that it will boost agriculture, trade and tourism while opening up previously hard-to-reach areas for economic activity.
“I see the Volta Region and the Eastern Corridor really boosting agriculture, boosting trade, boosting tourism and really helping our economy to grow,” he added.
