A six-year-old girl has died after a dilapidated building collapsed during a heavy downpour at Gomoa Jukwa in the Gomoa Central District of the Central Region.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred after part of the old structure suddenly gave way following hours of rainfall, trapping the child beneath the rubble.
Residents who rushed to the scene launched frantic rescue efforts and managed to retrieve the girl from the debris. However, she was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
Eyewitnesses said the building had developed visible cracks for some time, raising safety concerns among residents prior to the collapse.
Some community members have blamed poor maintenance culture and the deteriorating condition of old buildings for the incident, calling on authorities to take urgent action to prevent similar tragedies.
The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the morgue, while police have begun investigations into the incident.
Meanwhile, residents are appealing to the Gomoa Central District Assembly and other relevant authorities to inspect weak and abandoned structures within the community to avert future disasters.
