The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Education Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) have declared a nationwide strike effective today, Friday, September 25, 2026.
The unions cited delays in negotiating a new Collective Agreement, failure to automatically place qualified newly promoted teachers on the appropriate salary scales and the non-implementation of the deprived area allowance.
They said negotiations on a new Collective Agreement have stalled despite the expiration of the existing agreement.
“The existing Collective Agreement has expired. Unfortunately, the negotiation of the new one, which should have been completed on or before June 2026, has not been done. Thus, the new Collective Agreement stands un-negotiated, and we have raised this concern with the FWSC several times, but as of today, the issue is still outstanding!”
The unions also said teachers who passed aptitude tests in December 2025 and February 2026 had not been automatically placed on their appropriate salary scales as agreed.
They further accused the authorities of failing to implement the deprived area allowance provided for under Section 17(2) of the 2024 Collective Agreement.
The unions said the unresolved issues had created “widespread dissatisfaction, anger, and disillusionment” among teachers.
They have therefore declared the industrial action “effective today Friday, 25th September 2026, to press home our demands.”
The strike follows unresolved concerns over teachers’ conditions of service, including the expired Collective Agreement, salary placement for newly promoted teachers and the deprived area allowance.
