The Government is introducing a contra-flow arrangement for Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services on three major corridors into Accra’s Central Business District (CBD) during peak hours.
The arrangement will take effect from Tuesday, September 29, 2026, and will operate from 6am to 9am in the morning and 4pm to 8pm in the evening.
The intervention is being implemented by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs in collaboration with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) and the Department of Urban Roads (DUR).
The affected corridors are Amasaman-Accra, Adenta-Accra and Kasoa-Accra.
According to the Ministry, the corridors have been selected because of the high volumes of commuters travelling to and from the CBD during peak periods.
Under the arrangement, selected sections of the corridors will be temporarily configured to allow authorised Ayalolo BRT buses to travel in the priority direction against the normal flow of general traffic.
The designated contra-flow lanes will be reserved strictly for Ayalolo BRT operations.
Private vehicles, taxis, trotros, commercial vehicles and other unauthorised road users will not be permitted to use the designated lanes.
The MTTD will provide traffic control and enforcement support at strategic locations and major intersections along the affected corridors.
The government said the intervention is intended to improve the reliability and punctuality of Ayalolo BRT services, reduce journey times and ease congestion on major approaches to the CBD.
It is also expected to encourage greater use of mass public transportation, reduce pressure from private vehicles and improve urban mobility across the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.
The Ministry has appealed to motorists, commercial transport operators, pedestrians, businesses and residents along the affected corridors to support the initiative and cooperate with traffic officers.
Management of Ayalolo BRT is scheduled to hold a press briefing on Monday, September 28, 2026, at 10am to provide further details on the intervention.
The government said it will continue engaging transport operators, road users, local authorities and other stakeholders to ensure the arrangement achieves its intended objectives while maintaining road safety.
