The 2028 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has condemned the demolition of La Pleasure Beach in Accra, describing it as a “wanton” act that destroyed a socially, economically and culturally vital enclave while wiping out livelihoods for thousands of Ghanaians, particularly the youth.
In a press statement issued from Kumasi on Saturday, 3 October 2026, Bawumia said La Beach had evolved into Ghana’s most vibrant beach resort and a hub for international events and shows.
He noted that during the previous NPP administration, it played a key role in supporting the successful Year of Return and related activities that placed Ghana on the global tourism map.
“It’s sad that this very significant enclave has been demolished so wantonly,” Bawumia stated.
“It is particularly painful and surprising that even movable assets which the owners could have removed easily were destroyed in a most bizarre fashion.”
Dr Bawumia pledged to restore La Beach as a major tourist and economic centre, committing to protect and improve the thousands of jobs the beach economy supports.
He emphasised that the site’s international profile and its role as a source of livelihood made its restoration a national priority.
“I am committed to save the thousands of jobs that beach economy supports and to improve them,” he said.
The NPP Flagbearer further listed a five-point plan to bringing the beach to life when he assumes office.
These include rebuilding the beach economy and issuing leases to each business, redesigning the space to meet required standards while assisting operators to run their enterprises and securing space for Labadi Beach Hotel and other larger operators so they can coexist with the smaller businesses that form the beach’s ecosystem.
The economist further mentioned that he would engage the owners of LABOMA Beach to resolve outstanding issues and help them establish compliant operations and address lagoon-related flooding and environmental challenges.
