Ghana Card: NIA extends children’s registration to North East, Upper East

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has commenced the registration of children aged between six and 14 years in the North East and Upper East Regions.

The exercise, being undertaken in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), forms part of the NIA’s phased rollout of the Ghana Card registration programme for children within the age group.

In a statement dated September 28, 2026, and signed by the Head of the Corporate Affairs Directorate, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, the NIA said registration teams would visit public and private schools across the two regions.

The exercise will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with registration teams moving from school to school to register eligible children.

Children who do not attend school may register at designated schools or other approved registration points within their communities.

The NIA said parents or guardians presenting children for registration must provide the child’s original birth certificate, valid Ghanaian passport or Certificate of Acquired Citizenship.

Where none of these documents is available, a parent, relative or legal guardian may complete an Oath of Identity form.

The Authority said two Social Welfare Officers could also vouch for children who have no known relatives.

Parents and guardians have additionally been encouraged to present the child’s NHIS card or NHIS number, where available, to support the registration process.

Persons presenting children for registration must be Ghanaian citizens aged at least 18 years, be of sound mind and possess a valid Ghana Card.

The NIA has, however, clarified that children who participated in the 2024 pilot exercise but have not yet received their Ghana Cards should not register again.

Instead, such children are required to visit the NIA District Office where they originally registered to have their cards issued.

The Authority has urged parents, guardians, schools and other stakeholders in the North East and Upper East Regions to support the exercise and ensure that all eligible children are given the opportunity to register and receive the Ghana Card.

It also cautioned the public against providing false information or facilitating the registration of non-Ghanaians, warning that such conduct constitutes an offence punishable by law.

The latest phase follows the commencement of the children’s registration programme in the Volta and Oti Regions in May 2026, after which the exercise was extended to the Northern Region.
