Tension is brewing among transport operators in the Odumase Krobo Municipality over the government-approved 8% increase in transport fares.
The disagreement involves the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the Progressive Organisation of Transport Owners and other transport operators, with the GPRTU questioning the process and calculation used to arrive at the new fares.
The proposed fare adjustment has triggered disagreements among transport operators in the municipality, with the GPRTU insisting that there was no proper engagement with the union before the increment was announced.
The union has also raised concerns about how the new fares were calculated.
However, the Progressive Organisation of Transport Owners (PROTOA) and other transport operators disagree with the GPRTU’s position, maintaining that there is no illegality in the calculation of the fares.
The transport unions have called for dialogue to resolve their differences and ensure a peaceful implementation of the new fares.
Amid the disagreement, Municipal Coordinating Director, Samuel Affadu, has appealed to the transport unions to remain calm and work towards resolving the matter.
He said transportation was an important issue that must be handled with care because of its potential implications for public order and security.
Mr Affadu urged the executives of all transport unions in the municipality to come together to resolve their differences over the 8% fare increment.
He said efforts would continue to bring the various transport unions together to find an amicable and sustainable solution to the disagreement.
