New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Communications Director Dennis Miracle Aboagye has accused the President of failing to comply with constitutional requirements in appointing a Deputy Chair of the Electoral Commission (EC).
Speaking to Arafat Musah on Morning Starr on Starr FM, Mr Aboagye argued that the appointment of a person he described as an active National Democratic Congress (NDC) operative undermines the independence of the Electoral Commission.
“The President did not abide by the constitutional requirement. If he did, he would not have appointed a pure NDC partisan operative to the office of the Deputy Chair of the Electoral Commission,” he said.
He maintained that the Constitution and the laws of the country require the Electoral Commission to operate independently and not be controlled or guided by other persons outside the applicable regulations, rules and laws.
Mr Aboagye alleged that the appointee had actively campaigned for the NDC in the 2020 and 2024 elections and in earlier years.

Mr Aboagye also alleged that the appointee served as a special aide to Ayariga when he was Deputy Minister of Education around 2016.
He argued that appointing someone with such a political background to the position raises concerns about the independence of the Electoral Commission.
According to him, the appointment amounts to an infringement of the law, given the constitutional expectation that the Commission operates independently in the discharge of its responsibilities.
Mr Aboagye maintained that his concerns stem from the need to protect the independence of the Electoral Commission, insisting that individuals appointed to its leadership must not be seen as partisan political operatives.
