Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed profound sorrow over the military helicopter crash that killed eight people, including two cabinet ministers, describing the tragedy as a national heartbreak.

In a heartfelt social media post on Wednesday, August 6, Dr. Bawumia revealed that he had personally reached out to President John Dramani Mahama to extend his condolences in the wake of the devastating incident.

“I communicated to the President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, my deepest condolences following the heart-wrenching news of the loss of two of our nation’s Ministers and six others in a helicopter crash earlier today,” Bawumia shared.

He noted that he had personal relationships with most of the victims and was deeply affected by the loss. “I know most of the deceased personally and equally feel a sense of loss to see their demise under such horrid circumstances,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia, joined by his wife Samira and the wider New Patriotic Party (NPP) fraternity, expressed solidarity with the bereaved families and the entire nation, praying for strength and healing.

“The fallen men paid the ultimate price in the service of our motherland leaving a shocked nation in pain,” he added.

The Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter, which was transporting officials from Accra to Obuasi, crashed in a remote area near Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region after going off radar shortly after takeoff on Wednesday morning.

The victims of the crash have been identified as: Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC; Mr. Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

In response to the tragedy, President Mahama suspended all official activities for the remainder of the week and declared a three-day national mourning period beginning Thursday, August 7, 2025.

He also directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast until further notice.

Global leaders and institutions, including the UN, AU Commission, and the President of Sierra Leone, have extended condolences, with more tributes expected in the coming days.

The Ghana Armed Forces and aviation authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
