The Ghana Internet Service Providers Association (GISPA) is confident the sector would see an improvement under the leadership of Ursula Owusu-Ekuful as Communications Minister.

The association believes that the vast experience that Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful has from working in the communication industry over the years, would be brought to bear if she is confirmed by parliament to head the ministry.

In a statement to congratulate her on her nomination by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, GISPA is hopeful the business environment within which the sector operates would be enhanced in her tenure. The statement also indicated the readiness of the association to lend its support to ensuring that she carries out her mandate successfully.

Below is the full statement

PRESS RELEASE: NOTE OF CONGRATULATIONS TO MINISTER OF COMMUNICATIONS DESIGNATE

The Ghana Internet Services Providers Association (GISPA) will like to thank His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for Nominating Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful as the Minister Designate for Communications and also to congratulate her or her nomination as the Minister Designate for Communications.

GISPA is of the view that being the first woman to be nominated to the Ministry bodes well for the sector, but also the fact that she has enormous industry experience having worked with Westel Telesystems as Acting Managing Director and Zain as Communications Director of Corporate and External Affairs will see her succeed in her role as Minister.

When approved, GISPA will work with her to achieve the Ministry’s vision of managing “the convergence of information and communications technologies to ensure free flow of information and gathering of feedback for the promotion of a viable integrated national development process within a global setting”.

The Association also hopes that having worked in the sector before, she will use her position to ensure that the general business environment for Internet Services Providers and the ICT sector as a whole will improve greatly. GISPA will be ready engage with all stakeholders, especially government, to discuss the unacceptably high costs of doing business in Ghana, and to find acceptable solutions to them.

On that note, GISPA wishes the Minister Designate well during her vetting in Parliament.
