Former Second Lady, Samira Bawumia, has underscored the need for greater youth participation in climate action, highlighting their role in driving meaningful change across communities.
Speaking after the second edition of the African Women and Children’s Conference (AFRIWOCC) held on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, Mrs. Bawumia emphasized that the annual conference was born out of her passion for environmental sustainability and women’s empowerment.
“This is the second edition of the African Women and Children’s Conference. It’s held every year. The first was in 2023,” she said. “It’s about my passion for climate action, what we can do to support the environment and highlight the impact on women and young people in particular.”
She explained that the 2025 theme focuses on amplifying the voices of young people and giving them a platform for greater impact. According to her, climate action starts with individuals making small but consistent changes in their own spaces.
“It’s about knowing climate action. What can you do in your own space, in your little corner, to help climate action and be the change that we want to see,” she added.
Mrs. Bawumia described the opening day of the conference as engaging and inspiring, commending the diversity and energy of participants. “I am amazed at the diversity of the people present, and all the sessions were very interactive,” she said.

Encouraging the public to get involved, she urged everyone to visit afriwocc.org to learn more about the initiative and become part of the AFRIWOCC family.
Looking ahead to the second day of the event, she revealed that discussions would focus on unlocking financing for climate action projects and inspiring more young people to venture into environmental advocacy.
“Day 2 is going to be the same. We are going to have interesting conversations, and in the evening, we are going to have a major concert,” she announced.
