The Member of Parliament-elect for Akwatia, Lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has reaffirmed his commitment to improving education in the constituency with the donation of computers and other accessories to schools.
He presented 10 brand-new desktop computers, a printer, a projector, and accessories to the Akwatia Technical Institute (AKWATECH) to retool the school’s computer laboratory.
The donation, facilitated through the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), comes in response to complaints from schools without ICT facilities prior to the by-election on September 2.
Speaking to the media, Bernard Bediako Baidoo explained that his vision is to ensure that every school in Akwatia has access to ICT tools, adding that similar donations have already been made to Wenchi Salvation Army Senior High School, Takorasi Community Senior High School, and an Islamic School.
“We are in an IT-driven world, and our children must be well-equipped to compete. Education is not about words but about providing the right tools that will shape their future,” he said
He further disclosed that he has lobbied for additional infrastructure, including dormitories and a dining hall for Akwatia Technical Institute, as part of effort to improve infrastructure and create conducive learning environment for students.
The MP-elect stressed that leadership must be about solving real problems in communities, promising to continue working with stakeholders to improve education and development across the constituency.
Akwatia is one of the mining areas in Ghana. As a result most of the youth have abandoned education to engage in illegal mining.
Bernard Bediako Baidoo is hopeful the narrative will change as he intends to shift focus of the youth on education through strategic interventions.
Samuel Sasu Osei, Principal of Akwatia Technical Institute said the school had huge deficit of computer and its accessories affecting the practical learning of the subject.
“We offer computer hardware over here, which basically they try to repair, learn how to dismantle and then assemble every sort of computer, be it laptop, desktop, whatever. And so we need a lot to do such parties or to train the students to be good in computer repairs and what have you. And so, yes, just as we have received this, I’m gratified about this thing and even so excited about the computers that we have received.” The Principal said.

He said the school is looking forward for its infrastructural needs to also be addressed.
“We’ve even converted a supposed workshop into a dormitory, which they promised that in the near future they’re going to have a new dormitory block for us and then a 20-unit classroom block for us because we are running transition and we need 20-unit classroom block at least to be able to change to single track. and so we are waiting for them”.
