Chaos broke out at the 40-day observation of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, when supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) clashed with the entourage of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia.

The incident occurred when some supporters of the NPP started hurling insults, hoot and attempted to attack the NDC National Chairman and his entourage without any provocation.

The violent incident, which lasted for about 15 minutes, unfolded in the presence of former President Nana Akufo Addo and former Vice President Dr. Bawumia, the national Executives of the NPP and Leadership of the minority in Parliament.

The scuffle disrupted the solemn event until swift intervention by police reinforcements restored calm.

New Juaben South MP, Michael Okyere Baafi, was seen stepping in to separate the agitated youth in a bid to de-escalate tensions.

The 40-day observation meant to be a solemn moment of unity and reflection in memory of the late Ernest Yaw Kumi, but the violent exchanges left many in doubt if the September 2 by election will be peaceful.

Mustapha Gbande, Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, condemned the attack stating however that, it has given the party a new insight about the mindset of the NPP going into the election and as such the NDC will reassess its strategy accordingly.

Meanwhile the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, has called on the people of Akwatia to honour their late Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, by voting massively for the party’s candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, in the September 2 by-election.

Speaking at a vigil night held at Akyem Wenchi in memory of the late Ernest Kumi, the NPP General Secretary described the fallen MP as a dedicated servant whose vision for Akwatia must be continued.

He alleged that Ernest Kumi’s untimely death was linked to frustrations from the opposition NDC through court challenges after his 2024 election victory.

Justin Kodua urged constituents to demonstrate their love and respect for the late MP by voting massively for Solomon Kwame Asumadu, popularly known as Akwatia King Solomon, to ensure that development projects in the constituency are not derailed.
