The strike by workers of the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital aimed at forcing Medical Director of the facility to abdicate his post is gravely affecting academic work in some Nursing Training Colleges.
Trainee-nurses who use the facility for their practical lessons are being denied access to the wards and other departments, according to Starr News’ Central region correspondent Kwaku Baa-Acheamfour.
The striking workers are also turning away psychiatric patients who report to the facility for treatment, he added.
“…Nothing is moving on and students who are expected to have their practical lessons here are not being able to, due to the strike,” Daniel Sarpong who is the leader of the aggrieved workers at the Psychiatric Hospital told Starr News.
Workers at the facility have been striking for the past three weeks in protest of the refusal of the Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang-Manu to fire their Medical Director Eugene Dordoye.
Dr. Dordoye on November 23, 2017 apologised unreservedly to the staff and nurses of the facility after an intervention by Agyemang-Manu to resolve the impasse was rejected by the staff and nurses.
In a four page letter, Dr. Dordoye begged staff who had been hurt by his actions asking them to forgive him and help in making the hospital a center of excellence.
“I admit I sometimes went overboard either carrying out some of these changes or teaching clinicians (nurses and prescribers) about the patients’ conditions during review of the patients which sometimes to them were very embarrassing.
“I apologize unreservedly to all staff of Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital who have been hurt by my approach, the CEO, MHA, Central Regional Minister, Health Minister and all others affected and I will surely improve and manage the change better than I have done in the past going forward.
“I pray all to accept my sincere apology and help build a better hospital to achieve the vision of becoming the Center of Excellence in Mental Healthcare and teaching of same in the sub-region,” he wrote.
But the apology was rejected by the nurses.
