The Kumasi office of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation has been rendered non-operational after electricity supply was cut by the Electricity Company of Ghana over a GHc1.7 million debt.
ECG took the step to cut power supply after the State Broadcaster showed no sign of redeeming its debt obligations to the power distributor.
Staff of the state broadcaster, however, clashed with engineers of ECG when they attempted to cut the power supply.
Tyres of ECG cars were deflated by the irate workers of the State Broadcaster to register their protest. The ECG staff were also prevented from exiting the premises of the state broadcaster.
But the ECG has stated it will not be deterred by the unruly behaviour of the GBC staff.
Regional Public Relations Officer of the ECG, Erasmus Kyere Baidoo in an interview with Starr News said the misconduct exhibited by the GBC Staff will be reported to the Police
The disconnection exercise also comes after the Information Ministry in August this year pleaded with the Energy Ministry to hold on with the intended disconnection exercise at the facility.
Parts of the letter read, “disconnecting power to their transmitters, especially those that serve rural communities means cutting off a section of the Ghanaian population from national discourse.
“We entreat you to use your good offices to get ECG to stop these disconnections, while we (Ministry of Energy, GBC, NMC and the Ministry of Information) meet to find a solution to GBC’s indebtedness to ECG.”
