The Ministry of Agriculture has spent a little over GH₵1million of the GH₵15million allocated it to fight the fall armyworm on monitoring.
The deputy Agriculture Minister Dr. Sagre Bambangi disclosed this Thursday, December 21, while responding to a question on the outbreak on the floor by Builsa South MP Dr. Clement Apaak.
Also, he revealed that about GH₵11million was used in procuring chemicals to fight the devastating worms across the country.
The fall armyworm which the sector Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto described as a “biological phenomenon” which is here to stay earlier this year ravaged several farms in the Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, Volta, Eastern and the three Northern regions destroying over 15,000 hectares of farm lands.
Addressing parliament on progress made thus far in fighting the scourge, Dr. Bambangi said “following the outbreak of the fall armyworm the Ministry was allocated an amount of fifteen million, eight hundred and fifty-seven thousand two hundred and eighty Ghana cedis from government on the campaign against the infestation.”
“Out of the total amount ten million, nine hundred and fifty-one thousand was used to procure chemicals for control of the infestation. And monitoring…amounts to one million and fifty-eight thousand, three hundred and thirty one Ghana cedis,” he added.
He said the total expenditure up to date on the fight against the outbreak is a little over GHs12million.
