The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed solidarity with journalists who were involved in a road accident while covering an anti-illegal mining operation in the Ashanti Region.
This follows an incident on Thursday, November 6 at Dadwene near Afari, where five journalists and three officials from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) narrowly escaped death after their vehicle overturned while returning from an anti-galamsey exercise in the Obuasi enclave.
In a statement issued on Friday, November 7, 2025, the GJA said it received the news “with deep concern” and assured the affected journalists of its full support.
“We stand in full solidarity with our affected colleagues in this difficult moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, their families, and their media organizations,” it added.
The GJA emphasized that the safety and welfare of journalists remain paramount, describing the accident as a reminder of the dangers journalists face in the line of duty.
“The safety, welfare, and protection of journalists remain paramount to the GJA, and this unfortunate incident underscores the inherent risks associated with the critical work our members undertake in pursuit of public interest,” the statement noted.
The Association said it is engaging the relevant authorities to ensure the affected journalists receive proper medical and emotional support.
The statement, signed by Ashanti Regional Chairman Kofi Adu Domfeh, also urged institutions that deploy media personnel for field operations, especially in high-risk areas, to adhere strictly to safety protocols.
