President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Ben Nunoo Mensah believes Athletics and boxing are the only two disciplines capable of producing medals for Ghana at the ongoing commonwealth games in Birmingham.

Joseph Commey has won Ghana’s first medal after beating Allan Oiake of Papua New Guinea to progress to the semi final of the featherweight division where he is guaranteed a bronze medal

Ghana has secured itself the the first medal after competing in over 10 events at the ongoing commonwealth games in Birmingham.

Ghana presented 101 athletes to compete in 13 disciplines and President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Ben Nunoo Mensah tells EIB’s Betty Yawson in Birmingham that his best bet has always been on boxing and track and field events.

“Every country has its strong discipline, it’s not that you will perform well in all the disciplines and for Ghana, it’s has always been boxing and athletics. And coming here even though I knew anything can happen in sport, the other disciplines could pull up, my strong bet was on athletics, boxing and weightlifting. Traditionally we are strong in these disciplines.”

Boxers Wahid Omar and Abraham Nkansah will be hoping to increase Ghana’s medal haul when they face their opponents in the quarterfinal stage of their respective divisions while Sprinters Benjamin Azamati and Sean Sarfo will be in action on Wednesday night in the 100m event.
