The Atiwa East District Security Council (DISEC), chaired by the District Chief Executive Errnest Owusu Ntim, has intensified effort to clamp down on disturbing surge in peddling and drug abuse in the district.
A porridge seller who allegedly laced tramadol and other opioid drugs with porridge to sell to drug addicts has been arrested alongside other suspects.
The rise in drug abuse and other social vices is strongly linked to illegal mining in the area which has attracted large number of people with diverse backgrounds.
“Recently we raided Borga Sawmill area and we arrested a number of drug addicts and peddlers including a porridge seller who laced the porride with tramadol and other drugs to the addicts”
The DCE hinted of plans to establish a rehabilitation center in the future to help deal with the menace.
“For now we will try to send some of the addicts to rehab center, as an assembly if we get funds we will build a rehab center here as well “.
He urged the youth to desist from rather focus on their education to help churn out the needed human capital to facilitate development in the district.
