The Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has raised concerns over what he terms inaction from investigative, prosecutorial and judicial bodies when journalists are attacked.
According to the minister the development has almost rendered useless mechanisms put in place by the government to check the phenomenon.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament the Ofoase Ayirebi MP charged the public to hold investigative prosecutorial and judicial bodies accountable for the country’s poor performance on world press freedom rankings.
“In some instances the Ministry of Information had to intervene to make a direct report to the Ghana Police. As well as demand accountability on the investigation, prosecution and punishment of the perpetrators.
“Holding the judiciary and prosecution accountable on a sustained basis must be the norm,” Mr. Nkrumah stated.
Ningo-Prampram MP and deputy ranking on Communications Committee Samuel Nartey George on his part commended the minister for what he terms a bold statement.
Sam George however blamed the Nana Addo administration of destroying the enviable record of Ghana on press freedom.
“Mr. Speaker fixing this must come from the top it must come from the very top because in 2019 just before Ghana started dropping in press freedom ranking, the President of the country, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo attended the Ghana Bar Association meeting in Takoradi and stated that killing of a journalist, Amed Huale was not an attack on press freedom,” Mr. Sam George narrated.
