Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has announced that penalties for axle overloading on Ghana’s roads will soon be significantly increased.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, July 30, the Adaklu MP expressed concern over the damage overloaded trucks continue to cause to the country’s road network.
He emphasized that the current penalty regime is insufficient to deter offenders or repair the harm done.
“Our aim is to make sure that the accruals of axle loading becomes zero. If the accruals becomes zero, what it means is that people have stopped overloading,” he said.
“No amount of monies we collected in terms of penalty on axle loading can ever be enough to repair caused by truckers on our roads.”
To address the issue, the Ministry is proposing a tenfold increase in the penalty for overloading — from GH₵5,000 to GH₵50,000.
“We hope that will be additional deterrent for people to make sure they work withing the rules.,” Mr. Agbodza added.
He stressed that the new policy is not about generating revenue, but about protecting the country’s roads and promoting responsible transportation practices.
