Voting in the Ayawaso East by-election has concluded, with counting now underway to determine the constituency’s new Member of Parliament.
Over 40,000 registered voters cast their ballots across polling stations including Alhaji Iddrisu House 2, St. Kizito Catholic Church, and Nima JHS 1 & 2.
The by-election was held following the death of the area’s former MP, Mahama Naser Toure, who passed away after a brief illness at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
Five candidates contested the seat: Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Baba Ali Yusif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), and independents David Kanor and Umar Sanda Mohammed.
Speaking after voting, NDC candidate Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed attributed the relatively low turnout to the ongoing Ramadan period, noting that the constituency is predominantly Muslim.
“Many residents are observing Ramadan, which may have affected their ability to visit polling stations today,” he said.
The Electoral Commission held an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting with political parties ahead of the by-election, while security personnel were deployed across polling centres to ensure a smooth and orderly process.
Counting of ballots is currently in progress, and results are expected to be announced later today.
