The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has announced the indefinite adjournment of parliamentary proceedings, a decision made on Tuesday, October 22.
This announcement follows exchanges between lawmakers from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding which caucus holds the Majority.
Speaker Bagbin when announcing the adjournment disclosed that he had received a communication from the Supreme Court directing him to stay his earlier ruling, which had declared four parliamentary seats vacant.
“The peace of Parliament is in the hands of Mr. Speaker,” Afenyo-Markin had disclosed earlier, adding that the Speaker has confirmed receiving the Supreme Court ruling. The Deputy Majority Leader emphasized that the ruling will play a key role in the decision-making process and how both sides proceed.
The NDC minority insists that the current situation will persist until the Speaker formally communicates his next steps. “They are sitting where they are sitting because of the announcement of Mr. Speaker,” Afenyo-Markin stated, noting that the Minority Leader has made it clear they won’t move until another formal directive is given.
Afenyo-Markin also underscored that neither the Speaker nor the Clerk had authorized any movement of seats, pointing out that the NDC was responsible for the shift. “We are law-abiding, and the NPP will remain in our offices until the right thing is done,” he said.
The Speaker’s upcoming announcement is expected to clarify the situation and bring an end to the current standoff, with all parties awaiting further instructions regarding the next steps for Parliament.
