The Ghana Education Service (GES) is exploring the introduction of hybrid or online learning for Form One and Two students affected by the recent violent clashes in Bawku, Nalerigu, and surrounding areas.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Thursday, July 31, GES Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi, stated that consultations with key stakeholders are ongoing to finalize viable academic alternatives for students whose schools have been temporarily closed due to security concerns.
“The form one and two students, they don’t have any WASSCE ahead of them for their situation is not really an emergency issue. For them, two alternatives are under serious consideration. One, we admit that while the schools are closed down and the students are home, their colleagues on other schools are in class learning so these students will definitely miss out on the lessons they were supposed to be studying this period so we are still consulting,” Fenyi explained.
He noted that two main options are currently being considered. “ One of the options is that let them be in the house with their parents-lives are paramount-when peace and calm restore to the township and the campuses, then they come back then we extend their hours by an hour or two so that they could make up for the lost lessons. We are also engaging stakeholders on the alternative on online or hybrid teaching and learning.”
This follows a directive from GES to temporarily close down schools affected by the conflict, including Bawku SHS, Nalerigu SHS, and Zuarungu SHS, after violent incidents between July 20 and 26 resulted in student deaths, injuries, and destruction of school property.
In the wake of the crisis, GES has assured the public that it is working closely with the Ministry of Education, WAEC, and local education authorities to safeguard the academic future of students—particularly final-year students preparing for the 2025 WASSCE.
Further details on the rollout of hybrid learning and other academic recovery plans are expected to be announced as security assessments and stakeholder engagements continue.
