A respected international businesswoman, Ms. Niharika Handa, has filed a defamation lawsuit in Ghana’s High Court against Superweb Technologies, operators of Ghanaweb and one other over alleged false and damaging publications about her and her son, Mr. Punar Vasu Handa.
The lawsuit, filed through her counsel Sory & Partners @ Law, seeks GHS 5 million in damages, a court-ordered retraction and apology, and a perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from publishing further defamatory material.
Ms. Handa, who has extensive investments in hospitality, telecommunications, and real estate, previously served as Managing Director of a top hospitality management company where she oversaw projects for leading global brands. She also sits on the board of an international resort company operating across 25 countries.
In a statement after filing the suit, Ms. Handa stressed that her action goes beyond protecting her personal reputation. She described it as an effort to defend the integrity of journalism and protect Ghana’s standing as a credible business destination.
“This action is not only about protecting my reputation, but also about upholding accountability in journalism. False publications harm not just individuals but also the confidence of international investors who view Ghana as a trusted destination for business,” she said.
Court documents indicate that the defendants have been served and are expected to respond within eight days. The case will be heard before the High Court in Accra.
Alongside the filing, Ms. Handa described the disputed reports as “completely untrue and intended only to damage our reputation.” She reaffirmed her confidence in Ghana’s judiciary to handle the matter fairly.
She further appealed to the media and public to act responsibly when reporting or discussing unverified claims.
“I respectfully urge the public and media to avoid spreading unverified claims that only perpetuate harm. My family and I stand firm in truth and integrity,” she said.
The publications in question, dated September 10, 2025, allegedly carried multiple inaccuracies targeting Ms. Handa’s reputation and business interests.
She and her son have also raised concerns about personal security after sensitive personal information, including passport details, was circulated online, exposing them to potential identity theft and safety risks.
The case has already attracted attention within business and media circles, given its potential implications for press accountability and investor confidence in Ghana.
