Two people remain in critical condition while many others sustained injuries after a sudden swarm of bees attacked mourners at a funeral in Agona Otwiikrom, Agona East District, Central Region.
Residents and visitors had gathered at the community durbar grounds near Agona Kwanyarko to mourn two individuals who died in a road accident on Friday when thousands of bees unexpectedly invaded the area.
The attack was widespread, affecting not only the mourners but also livestock such as sheep, goats, and cows passing through the main street of Agona Otwiikrom.
Speaking to GhOne News, Albert Quainoo, former Assembly Man for the Agona Fawumanya Electoral Area, described the scene as unprecedented and shocking for the community, which has never experienced such an incident since independence.
He said, “The head of families and opinion leaders abandoned the funeral and ran for their lives.”
Mr. Quainoo explained that many mourners sought refuge by lying flat on the ground for over 30 minutes to avoid bee stings as the swarm overwhelmed the area.
The invasion abruptly ended the funeral proceedings, forcing attendees to flee for their safety. Those injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
The community remains on edge, hesitant to return to the funeral site to complete the rites scheduled for Sunday, unsure if the bees will return.
