The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has condemned the Ghana Police Service for what it describes as the unlawful arrest and detention of 40 Democracy Hub members protesting on a national issue.
In a statement dated, September 26, 2024, the organization voiced its strong disapproval of the police’s heavy-handed tactics.
“We condemn the unnecessary manhandling and brutality of citizens exercising their civic and political rights to protest,” the statement said.
The organization also raised concerns about breaches of the protesters’ legal rights, particularly the denial of legal representation and the unlawful detention beyond the 48-hour limit set by the constitution.
“The prolonged detention of protesters beyond 48 hours without being brought before a competent court violates Article 14(3) of the 1992 Constitution,” CDD-Ghana stated.
CDD-Ghana further called on the Ghana Police Service to focus on protecting citizens rather than infringing on their rights.
They also reminded the government that Ghana is bound by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which guarantees the right to peaceful assembly.
